2018 Subaru Outback

Patriot Subaru takes a close look at the 2018 Subaru Outback for sale now near Portland-Saco ME from our Saco location.  The best just got better!  No wonder U.S News just named the Subaru Outback as the Best Cars For Families "Top Wagon".

Patriot Summary:  The Outback is Subaru's best selling vehicle, responsible for the launch of the crossover trend over 20 years ago. The 2018 model sees quite a few upgrades that drivers will love. Combining rugged good looks with touches of real upscale elegance, advances in safety, multimedia upgrades, plus a more responsive and quieter ride, will keep this Outback at the top of the class.

Here are the primary changes from the 2017 Outback:
•    Redesigned front fascia with  wider and lower grille opening and new bumper design
•    New C-shaped headlights feature the "Konoji" daytime LED running lights
•    Redesigned front cladding offers more protection from mud and stones
•    A new high-contrast sporty wheel design on the Limited trim
•    Retuned suspension dampers will increase responsiveness and a smoother ride
•    Reshaped mirrors, more insulation, and CVT adjustments  will make the cabin quieter
•    Available with Steering Responsive LED Headlight System that aim the headlights as the driver steers
•    Limited and Touring models with EyeSight® will feature High Bean assist
•    Numerous comfort improvements including a revised AC system
•    Multiple upgrades to the multimedia capability, including ease of use

Exterior Updates:
The Subaru engineers gave the Outback a handsome facelift by creating a wider and lower grille and new bumper style front and rear that syncs up nicely with the iconic Subaru hexagonal grille.  The result is a look that is more rugged and regal. You will also notice the C-shaped headlights with very distinctive "Konoji" LED daytime running lights, as well as new parking lights.

Next the front cladding was enhanced to provide greater protection from debris, mud, and stones, presumably for off-payment, but good anywhere. The 2.5i base and Premium editions come with standard 17 inch alloy wheels, while Limited and Touring models use the 18 inch alloy  wheel.  The top Limited trim has a new sharp looking high-contrast wheel design.

A criticism of past Outbacks was that the integrated roof rack system didn't work very well with a number of aftermarket products. For 2018, Subaru now has standard roof rails with retractable crossbars, which should resolve the issue. The step style doorsills are designed so you can stand safely when attaching your carrier, loading and unloading.

Interior Features:
While the outside saw key changes, more actually happened on the inside, which should delight everyone.

First lets point out that the climate control system include a revised air conditioning system that circulates and cools faster, an issue that bothered some in the past.  The temp control dial was changed to be more intuitive to use.

Second, the tiny clock - no more. Much bigger and easier to read!  As another convenience, interior power stays on for short time after the car is turned off, perfect if you want to crack open or close the windows.

The Outback was always a quiet ride, but Subaru took strides to enhance the driver experience.  Exterior mirrors were reshaped to be more aerodynamic and quieter, thicker sound-insulation was added to the rear wheel wells and a sound insulating glass film was included.  The Lineartronic CVT for 2.5i models changed to a short-pitch chain, while adjustments to engine timing under acceleration further reduced powertrain noise.

You will notice new premium materials in the cabin in touch with the redesigned center console.  Premium and higher trims have genuine stitching on the dashboard, with the Limited and Touring adding stitching to seats and door panels. Dash controls in silver color bezels look great in contrast to the high gloss black trim.  The steering wheel has a luxury feel. Slate Black and Warm Ivory is now joined by Titanium Gray as an interior color scheme.

Infotainment and Multimedia Updates:
Biggest add was the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as system choices.  Enjoy the latest rendition of Subarus STARLINK® multimedia system featuring Bluetooth wireless. Two USB ports added to the rear of the center console for backseat passengers. Limited trim includes TomTom navigation and 3 free years of map updates. The 6.2" screen is now 6.5", or you can upgrade to an available 8.0" STARLINK® system. The graphics sure looks like a smartphone to us!  The 2018 now has two microphones and tech by Nuance voice recognition, highly compatible with Apple Suri or OK Google voice commands.  Standard STARLINK features are Bluetooth, a USB port, auxiliary input jack. 8 new apps have been added. Remember, this is where the Patriot Subaru Genius really helps out the new car buyer, by taking all the time you need to explain how it works and get you set up.

Safety Updates:
Safety is paramount to Subaru, and no year would be complete without new breakthroughs.  We previously mentioned the new Steering Responsive Headlights that turn as the driver steers for improved lighting around corners and curves.  The Limited and Touring editions equipped with EyeSight® will receive automatic high-beam assist which will switch the lights from high to low beam if it senses an oncoming vehicle.

A new item is a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) which identifies pressure for the individual tires.  All Outbacks have the rear-view camera, but new this year are screen guidelines that turn with the steering so you are more precise when steering in reverse.  The Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert indicator is larger, and easier for the driver to see. Another cool item are the doors that lock when traveling over 12.5 mph, and unlock when the driver opens his door. In the event of an accident deploying air bags, the locks automatically open.  There are also better latch anchors for easier child seat installation.

The Outback has always been a leader for being so many things to people - an SUV, a wagon, a real crossover.  The 2018 ups the ante on comfort and class, while at the same time adding a little more brawn. Very impressive. We can not wait to show it to you!  Come on in to Patriot Subaru, 769 Portland Road, Route One, Saco, ME and take one out for a spin. Love!
