All-Wheel Symmetrical Drive comes standard with the Subaru Legacy. If you want an AWD Fusion, add about $4000 to the base price. That's a big difference. In addition, the Legacy comes with a number of other standard comfort features, providing even more value. Gas mileage - the same - which is quite remarkable considering the Legacy is All-Wheel, and the Fusion is 2-wheel drive.

Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium vs Ford Fusion SE FWD
    • Off the bat, major difference.  The Legacy has Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and the Fusion SE FWD is a front-wheel drive.  When if comes to handling in the tough weather, or just hugging the road on a summer day, the Legacy is a clear winner.  If you want the Fusion with  four wheel drive, you're looking at the SE AWD version, and paying an additional $4000 more than the Legacy.

    • Price wise total MSRP, the base is very similar - Legacy $24,815 and the Fusion at $24,605 -  but with Legacy the AWD is standard. Plus, Legacy gives a lot more in terms of features at the base - Front head restraints, windshield wiper de-icer,  heated exterior mirrors, heated seats, automatic climate control,  in-glass antenna,  leather wrap steering wheel.  If you want the Fusion in AWD, be prepared for a base price of $27,525.

    • Both cars earned IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus recognition.  Both have dual dash, front torso and side curtain bags. The Legacy also has dual front seat cushion bags.

    * MPG is comparable. Legacy is at 25/34  city to highway.  Fusion is 23/34.  Surprising, since the Legacy is an all-wheel drive, and the Fusion only a two wheel drive.   If you did move the Fusion up to the AWD trim,  (which costs $4k more)  the mpg is 20/29.

    • Legacy provides 104.6 cubic feet interior space, compared to Fusion's 102.8.  Legacy has the largest interior in the midsize sedan class.

    • Fusion is a little bigger in the trunk with 16 cubic feet, Legacy at 15.

    • Overall, the Legacy is about an inch higher, while the Fusion is longer by 3 inches, and a half inch wider.

    • The Legacy delivers 175hp with a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine with Lineartronic 6-Speed Continuously Variable Electronically Controlled Manually Interactive Automatic Transmission With Overdrive (Standard).   The Fusion delivers 181hp with a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder engine with a 6-Speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission With Overdrive (Standard).

    • Note the turning radius - Legacy 36.8,  Fusion 37.6.  Lower the better!
