The Outback seems to have the Ford Explorer's number.  Having AWD is an advantage to begin with for the Outback, plus the Outback's MSRP is $2876 less.  Add in a better safety rating, far better gas mileage, more towing capacity, and a long list of exclusive standard features, the Outback powers past the Explorer.

Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium vs Ford Explorer Base FWD
• Big difference in handling and feel on the road comes from Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.  The Ford Explorer Base FWD is a 2 wheel, front drive, and costs $2876 more than the Outback 2.5i  Premium. If you wanted to upgrade to the Explorer Base AWD  it is $4950 more than the Outback.  Serious difference.

• Total MSRP Outback 2.5i Premium, $27,995, and it's counterpart Ford Explorer Base FWD $30,871. If you wanted the Explorer Base AWD, the total MSRP is $32,945.

• The Outback
with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus.  The Explorer did not receive a Top Pick after receiving a marginal rating on the 1 of the 5 key tests.

• Gas mileage.  The Outback, with AWD delivers 25/32 city/highway,  and the Explorer 17/24.   The 6 cylinder Explorer is going to be less efficient.  If you did opt for the AWD Explorer, it moves to 16/22.  Those gas dollars do add up.

• The Outback has a 2.5 liter boxer 4 cylinder engine with Lineartronic 6-Speed Continuously Variable Electronically Controlled Manually Interactive Automatic Transmission With Overdrive, delivering 175hp.  The Explorer is a 3.5 liter in-line 6 cylinder engine with 6-Speed Electronically Controlled Manually Interactive Automatic Transmission With Overdrive, delivering 290 hp.

• The Outback has muscle, rated towing capacity of 2700 lbs.  Despite the larger engine, the Explorer has a capacity of 2000 lbs.

• The Explorer is a significantly  larger vehicle:  almost 9 inches longer, about 4 inches taller, 6.5 inches wider.  Parking issues?

•  Despite the larger size, the two are similar in terms of head and leg room.  The Explorer has an inch more headroom both front and back.  Leg room up front is the same.  In the back seat, Explorer has 1.5 more inches.

• The Explorer does have more passenger space, 151.7 to 108.1 cubic feet, but the Outback has more cargo space, 35.5 to 21 cubic feet.

• Standard -  Both match up many standard features, but the Outback also provides active front seat restraints, heated seats, windshield wiper de-icer,  heated exterior mirrors, front fog lights, automatic climate control,  leather wrap steering wheel, Sirius XM, and an in-glass antenna, none of which come standard on the Explorer.
