At nearly $3000 less, the AWD Outback has a big advantage over the 2 wheel drive Highlander.  In only one area, the Highlander has an advantage, and that is with the 3rd row seating.  If you have four kids, you not only have your hands full, but you might need that extra row.  (What about the dog?)

Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium  vs Toyota Highlander LE i4 FWD
Total MSRP, Outback in at $27,995, and the Highlander at $31,030

    • Big difference in handling and feel on the road comes from Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.  The Highlander is a 2 wheel, front drive, but you have to engage the locking mode, and it turns off over 25mph.  The Subaru system is seamlessly integrated, and Honda is an extension of a base front system.

    • Outback delivers 25 City/32 Hwy MPG,  the Highlander 20 City/24 Hwy.
You would think it would be the other way around, given that the Outback is all-wheel drive.

    • The Outback with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus  rating.  The Highlander earned the Top Safety Pick rating.

    • The Highlander is a larger vehicle:  1.5 inches longer, 2 inches taller, 4 inches wider.

    • In front, both vehicles have the same headroom, with the Highlander 1.5 more inches shoulder room.
In the second row, Highlander has a quarter inch more leg, and just over 2 in the shoulder.

    • The Highlander does provide 3rd row seating.  If you have a large family, well the 8 passenger Highlander would have been more comfortable for the Griswalds driving to Wallyworld.   But remember, there is a cost to everything…

    • If you're ok with the two rows, the Outback gives you more base cargo space, 35.1 square feet to 13.8 sf.  So, if you have 2 kids and a dog….

    • The Outback has a 2.5 liter boxer 4 cylinder engine with Lineartronic 6-Speed Continuously Variable Electronically Controlled Manually Interactive Automatic Transmission With Overdrive, delivering 175hp.  The Highlander is a 2.7 liter in-line 4 cylinder engine with 6-Speed Electronically Controlled Manually Interactive Automatic Transmission With Overdrive, delivering 185 hp.

    • The Outback has muscle, rated towing capacity of 2700 lbs, almost double Highlander which is rated at 1500 lbs.

    • Standard -  Both match up on a list of about 31 standard features. Outback also provides smart device integration, an optional navigation system, heated front seats, dual zone AC, fog lamps, none of which Highlander provides.
