
The Rogue is a bit larger, but the Forester's higher clearance, lower center of gravity (boxer engine), better gas mileage, more towing capacity and edge on safety, clearly separates the two vehicles.

- The Rogue is slightly larger: 1.5" wider, 1.6" longer, 1" taller
- Forester has the edge in passenger volume; 103 cubic feet vs 100 cubic feet for Rogue
- Rogue has a bit more cargo space with the seats down with 70 cubic feet to Forester 68, but the Forester has a wider, squared off entry, so a bit easier to get things in and out.
- Third row seating. Rogue is the only vehicle in this segment to offer this feature. Cost is extra $826. Not big, but ok for small kids if needed. Drawback - you lose the spare tire! This means you need "run-flat" tires that are twice the cost of regular tires. And the kids - they're now in the crumple zone.
- Forester has more ground clearance: 8.7" to 7.4" for Rogue. Snow factor!
- Forester standard engine 2.5 liter four cylinder Boxer engine/ 170hp. Rogue 2.5 liter in-line four cylinder/170 hp. The advantages of the Boxer are well documented. The Forester can upgrade up to a 2.0 turbo charged four cylinder with continuously variable automatic transmission/250 hp. The Rogue has no power upgrade option.

- Trailing? Forester is rated to 1500 pounds, the Rogue 1000 pounds. Both require optional hitches.
- Price wise, comparably equipped, the Forester is $26,145 compared to $27,760 for the Rogue.
- The Forester is an IIHS "Top Safety Pick Plus", where as the Rogue earns "Top Safety Pick". The Plus difference is primarily in the side crash test results, that favors Forester.
