Subaru Crosstrek vs. Subaru Forester: Compare New Subaru Crossovers in Saco, ME

Subaru SUVs are appealing and versatile, offering comfortable accommodations, flexible cargo space, and many desirable amenities. Plus, thanks to attributes like tall ground clearance and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, they're also more capable beyond the asphalt than many class competitors. Compact models like the Subaru Crosstrek and Subaru Forester are popular for their well-rounded practicality and conveniently sized space requirements. But which one is right for you? To help you determine the ideal fit for your Portland-area lifestyle, here's a quick look at some of their distinguishing attributes.

Size and Accommodations

Subaru Crosstrek

  • L x W x H: 176.4 x 70.9 x 62.8 inches
  • Headroom Front/Rear: 39.8 / 38 inches
  • Legroom Front/Rear: 42.9 / 36.5 inches
  • Maximum Cargo Capacity: 54.9 cubic feet
  • Ground Clearance: 8.7 inches (9.3 in Wilderness)

The Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact crossover and the automaker's smallest model. However, it's still impressively roomy for the class, making it ideal for shoppers seeking comfort and practicality with city-friendly maneuverability. It offers ample passenger space, with 20 cubic feet to spare for cargo behind the second row. When your Auburn adventures require more storage, you can fold the rear seats to reveal 54.9 cubic feet.

Subaru Forester

  • L x W x H: 183.3 x 72 x 68.1 inches
  • Headroom Front/Rear: 41.2 / 39.6 inches
  • Legroom Front/Rear: 43.3 / 39.4 inches
  • Maximum Cargo Capacity: 69.1 cubic feet (74.4 in base trim)
  • Ground Clearance: 8.7 inches (9.2 in Wilderness)

As part of the compact crossover class, the Subaru Forester leverages its longer dimensions to provide more room for passengers and cargo while retaining convenient space requirements. Most Forester models have 27.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 69.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. However, the base trim's lack of a panoramic sunroof increases capacity to 29.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 74.4 behind the first.

Performance

Subaru Crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek's Base and Premium trim levels are propelled by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. They also include Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Subaru X-MODE®, an advanced traction management that helps reduce wheelspin in various low-grip situations. By choosing any higher tier, you'll upgrade to a 2.5-liter engine with 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, as well as a dual-function X-MODE® system with an extra setting for Deep Snow/Mud.

While all Crosstrek models deliver all-season confidence, the Wilderness trim takes the capability to the next level. It features attributes like off-road suspension tuning, increased ground clearance, Yokohama® GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, and a revised final-drive ratio for better climbing ability. It also includes reinforced roof rails with a 700-pound stationary load limit and a higher max tow rating (up to 3,500 pounds).

Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester comes standard with the more powerful 182 horsepower 2.5-liter engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. However, Subaru X-MODE® isn't available for the base trim level.

While the Wilderness trim wasn't a part of the 2025 Forester's sixth-generation redesign, it will still be available as a 2024 model. The Forester Wilderness includes the same attributes as the Crosstrek Wilderness, plus a 180-degree Front View Monitor for better visibility on tight trails.

Features

The Subaru Crosstrek and Subaru Forester are similarly equipped, including nearly equal base trim levels. However, the Forester offers a few amenities at lower tiers, including heated front seats, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and a wireless charging pad. The Forester lineup also includes the luxurious Touring trim, which includes several features unavailable in the Crosstrek. Examples include heated rear seats, driver memory, and a 360-degree camera system.
