The Subaru Legacy and Nissan Altima have many similarities in terms of power, mpg performance, safety, and creature comforts that come standard. What separates the two is that the Legacy provides All-Wheel Symmetrical Drive - standard. With the base price being just a tad higher on the Altima, at Patriot Subaru, we're glad we have the Legacy.
• Off the bat, major difference. The Legacy has Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and the Altima in any trim is only available in front-wheel drive. We think that when it comes to New England driving, and all the variables in road conditions, all-wheel drive is the only way to go.
• Price wise total MSRP, same ballpark, The comparable Altima is about $500 more: Legacy $24,815 and the Altima at $25,305. Remember, AWD is standard with the Legacy. That alone should be several thousand more in cost. The two are events matched in standard features. Legacy provides front seat head restraints, and windshield wiper de-icer, standard that the Altima does not. The Altima provides a moonroof standard, that is an option on the Legacy.
• Pleased to report both vehicles earned IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus recognition. Both have dual dash, front torso and side curtain bags. The Legacy also has dual front seat cushion bags.
* MPG is comparable. Legacy is at 25/34 city to highway. Altima is at 26/37. While the Altima is a tad higher, it's because it's operating with a 2 wheel drive system, versus the all-wheel drive Legacy. We'd rather have the AWD!
• The Altima has about 2 inches more legroom in the front, where as the Legacy has 2 more inches in the rear legroom. The Legacy has more shoulder room front and back. Overall the Legacy provides 104.6 cubic feet interior space, compared to Altima's 101.9. Legacy has the largest interior in the midsize sedan class.
• Trunk space is very close: Altima 15.4 cubic feet, Legacy 15.
• Overall, the Legacy is about an inch higher and half inch wider, while the Altima is longer by 3 inches.
• The Legacy delivers 175hp with a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine with Lineartronic 6-Speed Continuously Variable Electronically Controlled Manually Interactive Automatic Transmission With Overdrive (Standard). The Altima delivers 179hp with a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine with a Xtronic 2-Speed Continuously Variable Electronically Controlled Manually Interactive Automatic Transmission With Overdrive (Standard)
• Note the turning radius - Legacy 36.8, Altima 37.4. Lower the better!
